She began her career in the 1930s, appearing in films such as The Big Broadcast of 1936 and The Great Ziegfeld. She also appeared in television shows such as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and The Donna Reed Show. Backus was married to actor and director Robert Montgomery from 1940 until his death in 1981. She had two children with him, Elizabeth and Robert. Backus was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Screen Actors Guild. She was also a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Backus passed away on April 28, 2003 at the age of 92. Her net worth at the time of her death was estimated to be around $2 million.
